Native Silver is rare and much silver is produced from silver-bearing minerals such as prousite, pyrargyrite, galena, etc. Specimens of Native Silver usually consist of wires that are curved and intertwined together, making an inspiring mineralogical curiosity. In the USA, much silver was mined indirectly. For example, the mining region around ...
It is a hydrothermal ore mineral found in moderate to high temperature veins with other Ni-Co minerals. Associated minerals are arsenopyrite, native silver, erythrite, annabergite, nickeline, cobaltite, silver sulfosalts, native bismuth, calcite, siderite, barite and quartz. It is mined as an ore of cobalt and nickel with a by-product of arsenic.
Silver is a soft, white metal that usually occurs in nature in one of four forms: 1) as a native element; 2) as a primary constituent in silver minerals; 3) as a natural alloy with other metals; and, 4) as a trace to minor constituent in the ores of other metals. Most of the silver produced today is a product of the fourth type of occurrence.
Jul 19, 2021· In 1960, Castlebar Silver & Cobalt Mines Ltd. recorded a high-grade intercept from a calcite vein 621g/t Ag over 0.3m. BMR geologists sampled a mineralized calcite vein along one of the pit walls directly east of the main shaft that contained visible erythrite and cobaltite. The samples contained up to 6.6% Co and 1,675g/t Ag (Photo 2).
The historical silver mines at Kongsberg, Norway, are world-famous for spectacular samples of thread silver exhibited at numerous mineralogical museums. More than 100 minerals have been reported from the deposit, including native elements (Ag, Au, As, Cu, S, C), sulphides, sulphosalts, selenides, arsenides, carbonates, sulphates, arsenates and halides, in addition to a range of silicate ...
Here is a cool and rich silver ore specimen composed of a 10 mm thick vein section slab of silver and cobalt ore with rich veins of bright native silver growing with cobaltite in a white to gray calcite-dolomite matrix. There is a lot going on with this piece and it deserves a good long look under a hand lens to unlock all it has to offer.
Native silver occurs in a gangue of dolomite and quartz; other minerals include: argentite, niccolite, galena, sphalerite, marcasite, cobaltite, smaltite, domeykite, chalcopyrite and tetrahedrite. Locally above 360' level, rich secondary silver in vugs and fissures occurs as wires, leaves and nuggets of native silver (Sergiades, 1968).
In the Noril'sk ore field, parkerite is a characteristic mineral of sulfide ore that metamorphosed under conditions of zeolite and prehnite-pumpellyite facies and of arsenide-calcite veins. The mineral occurs in ores containing bornite, anhydrite, magnetite, mackinawite (3-5 wt % Ni), valleriite, calcite, ankerite, native silver, native bismuth, violarite, Te-rich bismutohauchecornite ...
crystals of silver (0.12 wt% Hg, 0.21 wt% Se) are present throughout and upon the matrix. Neither arsenopyrite, cobaltite nor safflorite have been previously reported from the Keweenaw Peninsula,
Native silver, nickeline (niccolite), maucherite, safflorite, rammelsbergite, pararammelsbergite, loellingite, skutterudite, cobaltite, gersdorffite, and arsenopyrite were analyzed on the electron ...
This is a slab cut from a much larger piece and both sides have been cut flat, but not polished to show the internal ore composition while the other edges have been left natural. So taking a close look at this piece, all the really bright silver-white areas you see in the photos are native silver veins running through a primarily cobaltite ore section with just minor other minerals present.
Presence of refractory native silver, bismuth and cobalt in chalcopyrite is inferredfrom microprobe analyses. Wall rock sulphidization also likely contributed to destabilising the gold-silver, cobalt, bismuth assemblages and precipitation of the minerals in the hydrothermal …
Dec 01, 2020· The native elements Ag and/or Bi typically precede the associated Ni-Co-As minerals . Actually, some of these deposits have been or still are major producers of silver; examples include Kongsberg, Norway ( Kotková et al., 2017 ), Chihuahu and Batopilas, Mexico ( Wilkerson et al., 1988 ), Imiter, Morrocco ( Cheilletz et al., 2002 ), Cobalt and ...
Furthermore, according the mineral assessment, it appeared later than the cobaltite, but earlier than native silver and native bismuth. The cobaltite contained 0.46–1.28 wt % Fe, 31.90–33.81 wt % Co, and 0.87–2.98 wt % Ni, and plots in the area bellow 300 °C of the FeAsS-CoAsS-NiAsS figure ( …

Description: The mineral was first studied by Shannon (1924), who concluded on the basis of chemical data only that it was a new species and proposed the name benjaminite. Nuffield (1953) re-examined the type specimen and determined that Shannon's "benjaminite" was actually aikinite. Nuffield, however, noted a minute amount of another phase in the type specimen that deviated from Shannon ...

This slab of mixed native silver and assorted metal ores is from the Cobalt Area, Cobalt-Gowganger Region, Timikaming District, Ontario, Canada. This area contains hundreds of mines operating for the recovery of metal and metal ores. According to the old label this piece is a large cross-sectional cut or slab of a silver vein with cobaltite.

Copper Group. Gold-Silver Series and Palladium-Silver Series. Silver is used in jewelry, tableware, coins, scientific equipment and in photographic processes. Silver tarnishes black with a surface layer of acanthite (silver sulphide), especially when placed in proximity to sulphurous compounds. It is primarily found as a constituent of hydrothermal veins.

So all the bright stuff is silver and all the darker gray stuff is primarily cobaltite and probably a bit of safflorite, and there is a "rind" of calcite along one edge! By weight I would estimate this piece is composed of about 15% native silver, another 5% calcite matrix, and pretty much the other 80% is cobaltite.
This piece is really a vein of nearly solid cobaltite with just a little calcite matrix and intergrown masses of thin squiggly lightning bolt veins of native silver richly growing through the cobaltite, and there is a flush of more bronze colored mineralization along one edge that I think is nickeline.
